As planes and clouds look the same around the world, flying is like being put in a capsule and blasted into an entirely different culture. You don’t know what hits you until screeching people, screaming taxi cabs and strange smells wash over you. But just because it’s unsettling, doesn’t mean its bad. Quite the opposite. Especially in this case: the 2008 ULURU trip to Istanbul.

On the last day of our 4 day visit, a tourist who had just arrived asked me which tourist attractions I could recommend. After giving it some thought, I answered “Istanbul.” Partly, because after touring the place almost non stop for 4 days, we hadn’t even seen a fraction of everything there was to see in Istanbul so I had nothing more authoritative to say. And partly because it’s true: yeah, you have the Blue Mosque, the Ayasofya, the Grand Bazaar and many more beautiful and unique buildings, sights and attractions. But best of all is the city itself. The nicest and coziest living room is a living room that has been used as such for centuries, that has seen various people come and go, relax, entertain, fight, make up, eat, sleep, make love. Istanbul feels like one giant living room, with a great history. Bazaars, shops, tea houses and bars appear to seamlessly extend into the streets. People meeting, chatting, trading and tasting everywhere. Madness in every direction.

It took some getting used to. But only for a minute, before I started thoroughly enjoying myself.

Yesterday Philippe and I visit the E-Plus HQ in Dusseldorf. We met Santa Claus on the Hauptbahnhof, and we drove trough the Königsallee noted for both the canal that runs along the boulevard’s centre, as well as for the luxury retail shopping venues

Before we did our meeting I was waked up by a wonderful Dusseldorf sun. Slightly like at home were my Philips Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock does the same. Research shows that light stimulates the senses, giving you more energy and helping you to feel less lethargic – that is why it is so much easier to rise during the summer months as opposed to the dark winter months. As the light falls on your eyes, a message is sent to your brain that positively affects the production of cortisol, the energy hormone. This means that at your required wake-up time your hormones are better balanced and you’ll feel more energetic right from the start of the day. Although the function is fairly simple it works well. I hate mornings and I don’t particularly like winter so I was keen to give this a try. It basically slowly wakes you up by increasing the light intensity over a 30 minute period, this works really well. The light itself is very powerful, you can alter the settings to any intensity you want. I picked the highest so that at the end of the 30 minutes it is like having sunlight streaming through the window.

And for those who don’t have Christmas plans, Dusseldorf’s annual Christmas market includes 250 festive stalls offering everything you need for under (or on) the Christmas, be worth it!

Up till now, these ideas merely existed in our collective mindspace. With the ULURU Wiki, they have found a place to land, gather and be noticed.

Communication
Besides new ideas in various stages of maturity, the ULURU Wiki also hosts information about current and past projects. This information can be used to draw inspiration and also in our communication with current and future clients. Without revealing too much about the nuts and bolts of a project, it can give a good picture of what ULURU is and what we do.

PHK199
And, last but not least, the ULURU Wiki features some very practical information about our offices at the Piet Heinkade 199: where to find toner to feed the printers, where to find coffee to feed the Ulurians, and where to find batteries to feed the wireless mice. All in all the wiki is a very handsome solution for internal communication and I’m sure we’ll put it to good use.

Sure, I’d checked my email on a friend’s IMac, but that was about it. ULURU however, is Mac only, so I was handed a sweet MacBook Pro and a nice Cinema Display “because you need that as a web developer” (I didn’t mention I’ve been programming just fine for years on a 15″ monitor) and was on my way to discover Mac territory. Barely half a year later and my job description has expanded to network administrator / support guy. Most of the people I’m supposed to help have more experience with a Mac than I have

This morning, things got even more interesting as Mick asked me to replace the top of his MacBook Pro. The left button of his track pad didn’t work anymore, hence its need for replacement. “Can you do it?” - “Sure.” - “Have you done it before?” - “Uhm, I’ve replaced the hard drive of a Toshiba laptop once.” But I knew this was a little different. After unscrewing some 40 screws, I had the thing open and was allowed a peek inside the well engineered innards of these fabled laptops. I had to say, I was well impressed by the way it was designed and engineered. Most of it, anyway…

Aside from 12 screws, the keyboard was fastened to the topcase by four bend-tabs. Why?? The instruction manual even read: “Important: The bend-tabs are delicate. Bend them carefully to avoid damage. Avoid over-bending.” No really? Just what we want: a tiny bit of metal breaking off and going rampant inside a laptop. A bit of a letdown.

But aside from that I had a lot of fun and even got the MacBook working again before lunch. Now I can’t wait for the next hard drive or touch pad to fail. One moment I’m copy editing, the next I’m gimping, PHP scripting or performing open brain surgery on a laptop: it’s the variety that makes me tick

Another great MoMo Amsterdam event yesterday afternoon! The quality of the speakers was high and they gave us quite some food for thought. The role of mobile in society was at the center of the discussions.

A remarkable afternoon ended with a remarkable Bruce Sterling climbing up the pulpit of the Rode Hoed and preaching us about the development of mobile technology: “As developers of mobile applications, you are living on a volcano and guess where the ashes will fall when it explodes?”

Connecting it all together
The mobile phone knows everything about each of us. Nowadays it knows our location (GPS), who we’re talking to, what our movements are (accelerometer), what objects are around us (NFC), who are our contacts and friends, etc… Think what you could obtain if you link this information together with the content you create (photo’s, video’s, messages, twits, blogs) and with other people doing the same:

Waiting for the next tram at the tram stop could be very different if your mobile phone could alert you that the person sitting next to you shares the same hobby with you or that you have a friend in common.

Visiting a city for the first time would be an entire different experience if your mobile phone could tell you where your friends and relatives stayed, what they enjoyed and which places they recommend.

It’s already all possible, but do we want to give so much information away and how do we control it? Great presentation by Johan Koolwaaij about iyouit from Telematica Institute.

Mobile revolution
The mobile revolution hasn’t yet started: The mobile phone still looks very much like 15 years ago and is mostly used for phoning, texting and passing regular internet content to its user. So much more can be done! To use Bruce Sterling’s words, we need to move on from developing the swamps (which the Dutch turned into a clean, organized and predictable but boring world) to developing the volcanos (which are chaotic, erratic and make casualties when they explode). Stop thinking about the plastic, which is what will be left of a mobile phone in 10 years, start thinking about the services! MoMo shouldn’t be the place where Vincent Evers preaches the fantastic new keyboard of the new Blackberry, yet another piece of plastic.

The “Internet of Things” will be made possible by the mobile (call it just ‘mobile’, not ‘handset’ or ‘phone’): Every object will have its place in the connected world and we will move as avatars around theses objects. It’s not about a virtual world or ‘augmented reality’ but about the real world, the reality. Mobile will change the way we interact with the real things and it’s just beginning now.

For more information and recordings of the event, go to the MoMo Amsterdam site.
